Why are people always MAD about fictional characters changing?

Harley Quinn stole Batgirl‘s legacy!”
Superman would NEVER kill!”
“Ariel’s BLACK!?!”

Everyday there seems to be a new bit of NEWS that causes a minor riot online. All across the fandom and the interwebs there’s ALWAYS something to be angry about. But why? Why are fans from Star Wars to Naruto so offended when someone is given permission to change aspects of their favorite lore and actually DOES?

Well I’ll tell you why I think that is. These stories helped to form may of our developmental years. They weren’t just something we watched or read, they were our teachers and friends. We learned from the Ninja Turtles and we imagined ourselves on adventures with Sailor Moon.

So for someone to come along and say, well now your friend got his special power from some drug that he’s addicted to… can kind of hurt a little for some people.

It’s the job of the writers and artists who create to build an experience that resonates with us in our real lives. Once we feel like those characters are part of our lives, it can be difficult to accept changes. It’s harder for some of us than others

I personally don’t have as much trouble with it as others… but I think it’s because I’m consistently writing and creating my OWN stories. but talk to me in 20 years when someone gives Aceblade a gun and makes him kill an innocent black mother… I might have a different reaction.
