What we Learned from Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman Live Commentary
While everyone is reeling from the Covid-19 pandemic. Director Zack Snyder decided to do his part in helping keep everyone inside by doing a live commentary on his highly criticized film. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition.
He completed this via Vero True Social on March 29th, 2020.
Encouraging his fans to queue up their copy of the film along with his. He stuck relatively close talking about the movie itself. Luckily for us though he went off on a few tangents giving us all a little to chew on in regards to his, now scrapped, future plans for these characters.
The Arc
For a number of years it has been known that Snyder was going to complete a total of five films within his secluded story. Starting with Man of Steel the story would revolve around the formation of the Justice League battling Darkseid and the army of Apokolips.
Early on in the commentary Zack confirms does confirm he had a five movie arc. There needed to be real circumstances over the course of the five films.
He specifically clarifies this when speaking on how he always wanted Jimmy Olsen to have a little more substance.
“I just like the idea that Jimmy was a spook for the CIA. I always felt like Jimmy, you know, never was capable, that capable, and to see him be like speak a foreign language.
People always ask me if hes dead, do we see him again, does he come back to life. I dont think so. It implies a bigger universe. It implies that these dominoes are falling as we go forward.“
Swanwick/ Martian Manhunter
Once again Snyder Confirms Harry Lennix‘s character General Swanwick is Martian Manhunter.
“Harry Lennix pretending to be a… Human being”
Snyder also reveals that Harry Lennix’s General Swanwick understands that there is a relationship between Lois and Clark, and also that Swanwick knows that Clark is really Superman.
More Story Revealed
The Knightmare scene when Bruce sees the future apparently happens due to a rift in the Speedforce. Snyder explains. While Barry is attempting to go back in time to warn Bruce of the impeding threat, something happens while he is on the cosmic treadmill that gives Bruce this vision.
This scene with Flash going back in time would be seen in a future film. However, the way it would play out would be different. They will realize that Barry would need to go to a different moment in time to warn Bruce of what is to come. To help prevent the events that have happened thus far. In turn an entire new timeline would be created and certain events would be rewritten.
Martha
Snyder broke down the highly criticized Martha scene. Many of us already understood this. It is nice for him to explain it in black and white for those who are still highly critical of this moment.
“It’s really this whole concept of branding criminals. The idea was that Batman had lost his own moral compass and he had become what he beheld. The whole idea of this movie is to create this arc where Batman confronts Superman’s humanity, that he finds himself again. That’s what the thesis of this thing is, that we’re all humans and that we all connect on a level. Our mothers have the same name. That is really sort of this fundamental, ‘we both have a mother, so we are both human.’ Even though Superman is from another planet, his connection to humanity is so clean that Batman is able to re-energize himself.”
Waking up a Mother Box?
Possibly the most interesting aspect he spoke about was the screams of Superman and Doomsday moments before they die.
“That Sound goes into the world echoes across the globe and wakes up the Mother Boxes on Earth”
It is such an intriguing and interesting concept. This makes a ton of sense why Darkseid would now send Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons to Earth. Realizing there are No protectors on Earth. No Lanterns. No Kryptonian.
A Sequel?
At the end of the event Zack was expressing his gratitude for all the support he has received from fans. It was here though he had a little fun with everyone about Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
“I think they should make a sequel to this movie some day. That would be amazing. That would really be something else.
Zack Snyder
Yea, wanna know what happens to these guys.
I mean don’t they eventually….. I don’t know. Form some…”
In that moment the video cut out and the event ended.
Overall the commentary was pretty cool to sit through and listen to Snyder talk about his process in creating this film and overall story. At one moment he expressed how he wanted to be careful in not revealing too much of the overall narrative but that it is difficult when doing commentary on this film.
Makes you think why he would keep those ideas close to the chest right now.
