What is DC’s Animated Movie Universe?

DC’s Animated Movie Universe is collection of films using the New 52 art style. Each of these films are placed within the same universe starting with 2013’s Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.

While each of these sixteen movies are connected there aren’t too many story lines that run through each one. Save a few here and there.

Recently it was revealed that the final film in the series will be released May 19, 2020 called Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. The premise will have the Justice League team up with the Justice League Dark, Teen Titans and Suicide Squad in one final battle against Darkseid to save the Earth.

Reception

The overall reception of this universe has been fairly positive. Many citing that this is the best versions of the characters put on screen. Rotten Tomatoes shows that the Average rating for most of the films to be around 7/10.

Not too bad.

My Take

It’s sad to see them end this current run and universe. While it has been stated they will continue to release animated films none will be connected to this iteration/universe of characters. I would like to believe that they are building up to introduce a Rebirth type of event with their films and expand even more. However, nothing has been revealed to any other plans after Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.

I have enjoyed every one of these movies in some capacity. I’m a sucker for universe building and some sort of connective tissue running through multiple films. With that said, this animated universe was right up my alley.

The voice cast is a collection of famous actors, many of whom fit the bill for who they play. However, there are some that just fall flat in my opinion. Of course you have to take into consideration that I grew up with the Bruce Timm animated series. So those voices are pretty much ingrained in my soul. But I digress, a voice cast with, Rosario Dawson, Sean Astin, Jerry O’Connell, Shemar Moore, Nathan Fillion and Jason O’Mara is pretty solid in regards to our heroes.

There surely is a lot to enjoy about this series of films. Seeing different and more adult oriented takes on the overall universe is a nice escape from the more childish content on TV today. The care taken when developing each story and finding ways to connect to the overall universe is a nice touch as well.

If you haven’t checked them out do yourself a favor and dive in. Would be pretty easy to do now with the stay at home orders in effect across the nation now would be a perfect time.
