RUMORVERSE: Are the CHAMPIONS Coming to the MCU?

With Marvel Studios producing shows and movies at a rapid pace. It was only a matter of time until they explored lesser known teams of the Marvel universe.

So who are the CHAMPIONS?

There have been two notable iterations of the Champions in Marvel comics history. The first debuting in October of 1975 with characters Black Widow, Angel, Ghost Rider, Iceman, Darkstar and Hercules. The publication ran for 17 issues ending its run in 1978. The second iteration, and most recent, debuted in 2016 and is the basis of this Rumorverse article.

Disillusioned by their predecessors after the events of Civil War II heroes Ms. Marvel, Nova, Miles Morales, Brawn, Viv Vision, and Cyclops left the Avengers to form a new team, Champions. During it’s run, which is still going on today, other heroes joined the fray in Ironheart, Wasp, Snowguard, Falcon, Patriot, Power Man, Dust, Bombshell and more. Interestingly their stories have been interwoven through major events within Marvel Comics such as Secret War and Infinity Countdown.

The Rumorverse

An interesting bit of information found its way to my desk this week. It is being said that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios is laying the groundwork for a Champions team up style event, similar to that of the Avengers throughout the first few phases of the MCU. Each member will have an introduction in either their own show or as a companion in another, leading up to these heroes creating their own team.

With a Ms. Marvel show, the eventual leader of the group, in development as well as Ironheart show, we can see the foundation being laid right in front of us. The only question is, “Who else can we expect to pop up between now and then?”

With WandaVision, Spider-Man 3 and the next Doctor Strange movie all exploring a Multiverse, it’s easy to see that Marvel Studios has an ability to not only add heroes like Viv Vision, Snowguard, and Cyclops to the mix but countless others as well.
