Enough is Enough! Looking At Lucasfilm and Star Wars
For the better part of 5 years we have heard rumors of Kathy Kennedy being removed from her position at Lucasfilm, the Sequel Trilogy getting a reboot and even remakes of the Original Trilogy being a reality. Well, I am here to tell you, enough is enough. While there may be some issues at Lucasfilm, but theses ridiculous rumors we continuously hear day after day are just that. Ridiculous.
Kathleen Kennedy Getting the Boot!
Let’s look at this logically. Kathy Kennedy, love her or hate her, is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. With films such as, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Back to the Future, Cape Fear and Jurassic Park under her belt you can’t negate that fact. While her run as President of Lucasfilm has been a bit rocky when it comes to critical reception. Her financial success cannot be overlooked.
With six film projects under her belt and completed she has taken in nearly $6 BILLION in the Box Office. This isn’t to mention the money made from Galaxy’s Edge (which has under performed by itself), merchandise and more.
If Kathy’s time at Lucasfilm is coming to an end, it wont be because she didn’t make Disney/Lucasfilm money. That much is certain
Movie | Year | Total Box Office |
Star Wars: The Force Awakens | 2015 | $ 2,068,000,000.00 |
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story | 2016 | $ 1,056,000,000.00 |
Star Wars: The Last Jedi | 2017 | $ 1,333,000,000.00 |
Solo: A Star Wars Story | 2018 | $ 393,200,000.00 |
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | 2019 | $ 1,074,000,000.00 |
The Mandalorian | 2019 | N/A |
Total | $ 5,924,200,000.00 |
So, what could the reasoning be for people like Doom Noggle to post You Tube videos that she is being removed? Well, the fan reception has been rocky, at best. Especially when it comes to those six film projects mentioned above. However, really thinking about it, the reception has been no better or worse then when George Lucas was running the show releasing content between 1999-2005.
The Star Wars fandom is full of expectation and fan theories which is what makes releasing content inside that property so difficult. We wont sit here and say that the sequel trilogy was phenomenal. It absolutely could have been done better with more planning and connection to the previous films. What we got is what we got though. There are some amazing moments and aspects of those films. However this leads me to the next point of this article.
Sequel Trilogy to be Rebooted?
This would mean Disney would have to take a knock on the chin and agree that what they had allowed Lucasfilm to do was a failure. That just isn’t going to happen. The sequels are what they are. Enjoyable to a point, but lacking any real Star Wars substance that the fans have grown to Love over the last 40+ years. It is a real shame, and if you want an in-depth look at the sequel trilogy and all that was good and bad, head over to the Shootin’ the Sith Podcast or Youtube to get a real informative take on what transpired between 2012 and 2019.
Everyone needs to be honest with themselves. Many things were rushed and mangled with over the better part of a decade after Disney purchased Lucasfilm. However, we know that Disney will simply push forward and instead of re-writing their wrongs or failures they will simply put more content out to simply forget about them.
